"Cheltonians" buried in this Cemetery

Major William Richard Norton ANNESLEY, DSO, Royal West Kent Regiment, attached to the General Staff, War Office, London, is buried in Row E, Grave 106.   He died of illness in London on 29th November 1914.

He is commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial and on the Cheltenham College Roll of Honour.   He is also commemorated on the Wotton-Under-Edge War Memorial.

He attended Cheltenham College between May 1879 and December 1882 and his parents Major-General William Richard Annesley and Mrs Isabel Annesley resided at 7 Bayshill Terrace, Cheltenham.   He left a widow, Mrs Edith Mackenzie Annesley, who resided at 16 Greyfriars Gardens, St Andrews, Fife.

Notes:

1.    Patrick and Diane Anderson of Letham, Forfar are acknowledged and thanked most sincerely for taking the photo of the plaque in St Andrews Western Cemetery.   They also laid a small commemorative wooden cross at the base of the wall on which the plaque is located.

2.   Maj Annesley's son, William Robert Bathurst Annesley is also commemorated on the plaque.   He served in the Great War as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers before transferring as a Captain to the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force.
