    Surnames - K

Some apparent  inaccuracies and anomalies have been discovered in respect of the spelling of surnames, service/regimental records, details of birth and death events and other matters in The Book, the Debt of Honour Register at the CWGC, on local war memorials and in the publication "Officers and Soldiers Who Died In The Great War".

 

(It should be noted that the many Observations here are being gradually investigated and corrected where necessary)

KEARSEY Frank

Correct surname is CASEY.   In his Will dated 31st August 1914 he states, "I swear that my correct name is Frank Casey but through an error years ago the name Kearsey was adopted".

KENSINGTON Dudley

Commemorated on a plaque in St Luke's Church.

KIDD James

The Book, page 334

Serving with 13th Observer Company Royal Defence Corps at death.   Regimental number 50767.   Died on 25th February 1917 and buried in Cheltenham Cemetery Plot A1/2003.

KILBEY William Tillin

Surname is KILBY.

KING Archibald Percy

Served as 7788, Pte, 2nd Bn Ox & Bucks LI and killed in action in France on 25th March 1918, aged 27.   Buried in Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, Cambrai, France.   Resided at "Zeppelin", Cemetery Road (now Bouncers Lane) Cheltenham.   Commemorated on the Cheltenham War Memorial, the All Saints Church War memorial and on the St James' School Roll of Honour.

KING Archibald Thomas

Birth registered in Cheltenham Q2 - 1887 as Alfred Tom.   Regimental number is M2/077535.   Not commemorated on the All Saints Church War Memorial.   Commemorated on the Charlton Kings (St Mary's Church) War Memorial.

KING Ernest John

Birth registered in Cheltenham Q3 - 1894.   Aged 22 at death.   Also commemorated on the St James' Church Roll of Honour and on the St James' School Roll of Honour.

KING Joseph Sydney

KING Lasford

Aged 30 at death.   Died in India on 20th October 1917 and buried in Bolarum Cavalry Barracks Cemetery, India.

KING Thomas

KITZ Henry William

KYTE W H N

The Book, page 340

Commemoration on St Peter's Church War Memorial refers to William Henry Nelson KEYTE who served as 16989, Pte, 10th Bn Worcs Regt.   He was wounded in action on 4th June 1916 and evacuated to the UK (Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham) on 8th July 1916.  Discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 14th March 1918 and died of pneumonia on 25th October 1918, aged 25.   Buried in an unmarked plot in Swindon Village (St Lawrence) Churchyard.   Father, Mr Winfield John Keyte, resided at 4 Swindon Road North, Cheltenham then at Woodbine Cottage, Swindon Village.
