Born at Cheltenham Q1 - 1898.   In the 1901 and 1911 Census he and his family are residing at 118, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham.

Worked on the railways and became as member of the National Union of railwaymen in 1916 aged 18.

Enlisted or conscripted into the Army in 1917 and posted to the London Regiment.

Killed in action in the Arras area of France on 28th March 1918 serving with 1/5th Battalion London Regiment, on detachment from parent unit 1/8th Battalion London Regiment.   His body was never identified or recovered from the battlefield and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.

The commemoration on the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour (and on the Holy Trinity School Roll of Honour) refers to Charles Ernest James Brookes whose birth was registered in Cheltenham in Q4, 1885.   Parents, Alfred Henry and Mary Ann Brookes resided at 8 Sherbourne Street, Cheltenham.   He enlisted into 11th Bn Glos Regt on 26th June 1915 but was discharged from the Army, due to illness on 9th September 1915.   He died at his home 3 Ambrose Street, Cheltenham, Cheltenham on 17th October 1915 and is buried in the unmarked Plot L/16527 at Cheltenham Cemetery.   We have made the MoD/CWGC aware of the circumstances of his service and death but rejected our case for him to be classified as official war casualty.
